Thanks for dropping by to find out more about Ceramics by GillO.
My name is Gillian Officer (hence GillO) and I’m based in the beautiful county of Angus in the East of Scotland. I first dabbled in ceramics in 2016 and quickly grew to love both the challenge of working with clay and the excitement of opening the kiln after a firing to catch my first glimpse of the final results!
The items that I make are all individually crafted and I often make use of natural materials in the construction and/or decoration of a piece. I mainly use hand-building techniques – slabbing, coiling and pinching – and get most fulfilment from creating items which can be useful as well as decorative.
I work on a small scale out of my home studio. Each finished piece is the end-result of a lengthy process of hand-building, drying, initial firing, decoration / glazing and then a final firing. I don’t mass produce and like my items to evolve as I go along, so no two pieces are ever the same.
The Angus Range
For inspiration, I borrow heavily from the landscape around me. Angus is such a beautiful, varied and under-appreciated county, stretching from the hills and glens of the southern Cairngorms, through country towns and agricultural plains to the beaches and cliffs of the North Sea coast.
The shape, texture and colour of this landscape, together with its rich heritage, never fail to inspire and a trip out makes me long to get back into the studio.
I currently sell my items privately, so if you wish to get in touch, please e-mail me at: ceramics@gillo.co.uk
Thanks for your interest in my work,
